1. An 84 year old previously healthy man attends his GP with a persistent headache that becomes aggravated when he chews food.  Blood tests show a markedly raised ESR.

 

2. A female student presents with generalised joint pain and a symmetrical facial rash she says is worse after she goes out in bright sunlight.  She has also noticed hair being left on the pillow when she wakes in the mornings.  A blood test identifies anti-nuclear antibodies.

 

3. A 32 year old man with a history of intravenous drug abuse presents to his GP with fever, muscle weakness and generalised abdominal pain.  He has a raised ESR and his blood pressure is 150/95mmHg.

 

4. A 36 year old women presents with fatigue and painful extremities that go white in the cold.  She has also started having trouble swallowing food.  On examination you note scarred, puffy fingers with a waxy sheen.

 

5. A 7 year old boy is brought in by his distressed mother with an unrelenting fever.  On examination his eyes, lips and palms are reddened and he has several enlarged cervical lymph nodes.
